Malawi just like many other Sub Saharan Countries is facing a critical shortage of Nurses and Midwives. Malawi needs about 20, 000 more nurses to meet the WHO standard of 1 Nurse for 75 population in order to effectively serve its 14.1 million population. Mzuzu University through the Department of Nursing and Midwifery trains generic Nurses and Midwives at a Bachelor of Science level.

The Department is a beneficiary of NEPI a USA President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) funded project that will see Malawi strengthening quantity (numbers of Nurses and Midwives), quality and relevance of Nursing education. Specifically, the department will strengthen a clinical preceptorship (Clinical Teaching) component of the project. The NEPI initiative has been launched at Golden Peacook Hotel in Lilongwe. The Ministry of Health Honorable Dr Jean Kalilani MP graced the occasion. The Acting Vice Chancellor Associate Prof Orton Msiska witnessed the launch.
