The 35th Ordinary Meeting of Senate was held to consider various matters required for efficient and effective programme implementation in the 2019/2020 Financial Year. Chairing this Ordinary Meeting of Senate – his first since assuming duty as Vice-Chancellor of MZUNI on 1 July 2019 – Prof. John D. Kalenga Saka emphasised the need for MZUNI to maintain its top position among Malawi’s public universities and strive for a rank among the Top 100 Universities in Africa. “We must prioritise the provision of relevant high-quality international teaching and learning experiences at MZUNI. It is, therefore, important for us to plan together on the University’s delivery of academic functions and implementation of efforts in governance, quality enhancement and competitive growth,” Prof. Saka urged Senators. The meeting also highlighted the important role of research and Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) to the internationalisation of the University. Senators agreed on ways to ensure staff adherence to the set high academic standards as required by the National Council for Higher Education, the importance of cultivating a culture of Umunthu, and improving the welfare of academic and support staff.
