Be part of the change. Power the future. Welcome to the Department of Energy Engineering!

The Department of Energy Engineering is more than just an academic unit—it is a hub for innovation, problem-solving, and leadership in sustainable energy. Our graduates go on to transform communities, influence policy, and pioneer solutions for a cleaner, greener future.

More about our Department

The world’s energy landscape is rapidly evolving, and the need for sustainable solutions has never been greater. At the Department of Energy Systems, we are at the forefront of addressing energy challenges through cutting-edge research, innovation, and training in Renewable Energy Technologies (RET). Whether you aim to develop clean energy solutions, influence policy, or drive technological advancements, our programs equip you with the expertise to make a lasting impact.

Our journey began in 2004 as the Department of Energy Studies, responding to a national call for expertise in renewable energy. A 1998 analysis by the Malawi Government through the National Sustainable and Renewable Energy Programme (NSREP) highlighted a critical shortage of trained professionals in the field. To bridge this gap, the Test and Training Centre for Renewable Energy Technologies (TCRET) was established in 2003, paving the way for our department’s formation.

In 2018, following Mzuzu University’s faculty restructuring, we became the Department of Energy Systems under the Faculty of Science, Technology, and Innovation (FoSTI). Today, we continue to lead in developing talent and solutions for Africa’s energy future.

Programmes

Our flagship programmes equip students with the skills to plan, design, install, and manage renewable energy systems, ensuring sustainable energy solutions for the future.

Research, Outreach and Publications

Our department and research teams actively publish in peer-reviewed journals, contributing valuable insights to the fields of Energy Engineering. These publications reflect our commitment to academic excellence and our drive to address pressing global challenges.

Research Projects

Carrying out research with NCST on the use of solar crop dryer to reduce post-harvest loses in maize through APPSA project.

The Department constructed and commissioned 12 biogas plants in Mchinji District in partnership with MREAP

Constructed 6 biogas plants, one at Chibavi Primary School in Mzuzu, one at Chiputula Primary School in Mzuzu, 2 at Karonga Girls Secondary School and 2 at Lulindo Primary School in Karonga in partnership with CCODE.  We also designed the solar energy system for street lighting at Mzuzu University.

In 2024, the Department trained staff from Airports Development Limited on Biogas Technology. It also trained staff from the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority.
