Mzuzu University (MZUNI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DT Global, which is managing the European Union (EU)-funded Tikope Alendo ndi Nkhani Zachilengedwe (TAZA) initiative.

Speaking during the signing ceremony on Wednesday 14th October, 2026 MZUNI Vice-Chancellor Professor Wales Singini said the partnership aligns with the university’s strategic pillars and will strengthen its collaboration with the European Union.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the initiative for its potential to contribute to the growth of Malawi’s tourism sector.

“The university is going to establish a research centre for ecotourism, which will champion research and innovation in ecotourism, as well as capacity building,” he said.

European Union Ambassador to Malawi, His Excellency Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi, said the success of ecotourism depends on the participation of all stakeholders, including local communities, government institutions and the private sector.

Through the €8 million Green Heart of Africa Programme, the EU will support stronger local capacity and create opportunities for communities to benefit from Malawi’s tourism value chain.

“Grants will be provided to small businesses in the ecotourism space. The whole idea is about bringing together environmental conservation and the creation of job opportunities for those who depend on ecosystems,” he said.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Jean Munyenyembe, described ecotourism as an important driver of sustainable development in Malawi. She said the sector has the potential to generate income that can support the management and protection of the country’s natural resources.

Munyenyembe said the TAZA initiative would provide training opportunities for local communities, enabling them to benefit from ecotourism activities.

The partnership is expected to strengthen MZUNI’s contribution to ecotourism through research, innovation and capacity building, while creating opportunities for local communities and small businesses. Through the TAZA initiative, the university and its partners aim to promote the sustainable use of Malawi’s natural resources while supporting job creation and the growth of the tourism sector
