Following their victory in the intra-college debate, Mzuzu University’s Debate Team emerged victorious after outclassing the University of Livingstonia and St John’s School of Health Sciences during the regional finals held at St John’s School of Health Sciences on Wednesday, 28th October 2026.
The debate, held under the motion “Malawi’s healthcare system must shift its primary focus from curative treatment to preventive public health and universal basic health care,” featured constructive arguments from participating teams. The quality of the discussions demonstrated that many of the debaters were well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to discussions on issues of national importance.
The MZUNI team comprised Frank Maxwell Mpasuka, Tony Buleya and Watipa Msiska. The trio amassed 216 points to secure a spot in the national finals, which will take place on a date to be announced.

MZUNI will now face the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), the University of Malawi (UNIMA) and the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).
The debate was organised by the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) to strengthen research and analytical abilities, promote critical thinking and confidence in public speaking, and showcase youth perspectives on Malawi’s development, among other objectives.
