Lecturer, Head of Department
Dr. Chrispin Gogoda
Dr. Chrispin Gogoda, the Head of the Department of Energy Systems and Centre Director for SABESS CoE, holds a PhD in Energy Systems and an MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology from Loughborough University, UK in 2022 and 2015, respectively. Chrispin, a Lecturer in Renewable Energy Systems Engineering with a First Class BSc degree in Renewable Energy Technologies obtained from Mzuzu University, is a Faraday Institution Battery Ambassador for Malawi and also leads and co-leads a number of high profile projects in the university. Chrispin’s expertise in renewable energy cuts across the different renewable energy technologies but with emphasis on battery energy storage, solar PV and hydropower systems. His strength is in interdisciplinary approach to research, blending technical and non-technical aspects of the renewable energy space. Productive use of energy (PUE) and gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) continue to be the blend of his research interests alongside technology transfer to the last mile; currently with three research grants around PUE and GESI. Chrispin has experience in delivering projects in Malawi, Zambia, Kenya, India, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Tanzania and the UK, demonstrating his ability to work with diverse communities. While a PhD student at Loughborough University, Chrispin designed a novel low-cost battery test rig for promoting battery research in developing countries. On return from his PhD study, then as a Postgraduate Coordinator in the department, he led the process of rolling out the first master’s program in the Department of Energy Systems, MSc in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems which started in October 2025. Recently, he led the development of the Southern Africa Battery Energy Storage Systems Centre of Excellence (SABESS CoE) which started on 1 November 2025. While a Coordinator for the Test and Training Centre for Renewable Energy (TCRET) (2023-2025), Chrispin led the rolling out of online delivery mode TCRET short courses, trained over 275 participants and successfully delivered a CESET funded pioneer training model that targets training female engineers and technician (from other field) in renewable energy as a way of increasing women participation in renewable energy. Chrispin is a two-time Commonwealth Scholarship awardee in support for his MSC and PhD studies in the United Kingdom.
