Dr. Cogitator Wilton Yawaka Mapala
Dr. Cogitator Wilton Yawaka Mapala is a historian of religion and an education expert. He has been the Postgraduate Coordinator for the Department of Theology and Religious Studies since 1st March 2023. He holds a PhD in the History of Christianity and a Master of Education in Curriculum Studies (Credit) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, obtained in 2017 and 2022, respectively. He also earned a Master of Theology (Credit, 2008) from the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, focusing on the History of Christianity, Anthropology, and Sociology, along with a University Certificate of Education (Credit, 2012) from the University of Malawi, a Bachelor of Divinity (Credit, 2002) from Zomba Theological College in partnership with the University of Malawi, and a Licentiate of Theology (Distinction, 2000) from Zomba Theological College. He has been teaching at university level since 2008 and joined Mzuzu University on 1st September 2022. He is a member of the Society of Church Historians in Southern Africa and the Theological Society in Malawi. An ordained minister of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian since 1998, he initiated research partnerships through MoUs between Mzuzu University and both the University of Edinburgh and Kyambogo University in Uganda. He is the country’s Principal Investigator for the Faith and Health Project in East and Central Africa, a collaborative initiative involving the University of Edinburgh, Mzuzu University, Kyambogo University, and the University of Livingstonia, funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His research interests include religion and politics, religion and public health, religion and development, and curriculum studies in Social Studies. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses and supervises students.
