Mzuzu University (MZUNI) teams showcased their sporting prowess at the recently held Tertiary Students Sports Association of Malawi (TESSAM) tournament, emerging as overall champions.
The tournament took place from November 29th to 30th, 2025, at the University of Malawi in Zomba.

The Green Intellectuals excelled in multiple categories. The university’s volleyball team, the MZUNI Trojans, clinched first position and in football both the MZUNI Ladies Football Team and MZUNI FC secured top honours, further boosting the university’s medal haul. The victorious run was capped with a strong display from the MZUNI Queens, who emerged as champions in netball.

Speaking in an interview, MZUNI Sports Administrator Felix Kaliwo attributed the teams’ success to the commitment of the students and the invaluable support provided by the university administration.

“I would like to thank all the students for their outstanding performance in various sporting disciplines despite their busy schedules, which require balancing academic work and sports. Most importantly, we thank the University Management for fully supporting the students to participate in sporting activities,” Kaliwo remarked.

He further encouraged students to keep up their enthusiasm for sports, citing the positive impact of athletics on individual growth and the university’s reputation.

The TESSAM games provide a platform for students to showcase their talents and promote competition among higher learning institutions in Malawi. MZUNI’s resounding success at this year’s edition solidifies its growing reputation as a powerhouse in sports inspiring both current and prospective students to pursue their sporting ambitions alongside academic excellence.
