Dr. Khumbo Kumwenda is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. He is also currently serving as Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology, and Innovation. Dr. Kumwenda earned his PhD in Mathematics from the University of the Western Cape (South Africa) in 2011. He also holds a Master of Science in Information Theory, Coding, and Cryptography from Mzuzu University (2006), a Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Cape Town (2008), and a Bachelor of Science (Education) from Mzuzu University (2003). His research interests include Algebra and Mathematics Education. Specifically, he has conducted research in Error Correcting Codes, Algebraic Graph Theory, and Mathematics Education. Dr. Kumwenda has received grants from several institutions, including the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the International Centre of Pure and Applied Mathematics (CIMPA), the International Mathematical Union (IMU), and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). He hosted Malawi's first CIMPA School at Mzuzu University in 2023, served as an external examiner for several local and international universities, reviewed papers for Mathematical Reviews and ZBMath, and has been part of the organising team for the Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiads since 2015.
