Mzuzu University (MZUNI) has contributed various items worth about K13.5 million which will be distributed to people affected by Cyclone Freddy in the Southern Region.

The items include clothes, shoes and beddings collected from MZUNI Council, employees, students and Mzuzu residents. The other items the University procured are 27 cartons of sanitary pads and 28 cartons of washing soap.

Presenting the donation to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs on Friday, MZUNI Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Kalenga Saka said they felt duty bound considering that the institution has a satellite centre in Mulanje District.

“We are very concerned with what has happened to our brethren in the Southern Region. And therefore, following the call by the State President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, who is also the Chancellor of Mzuzu University, we took that matter seriously that is why the council, members of staff, students and residents came together to contribute towards the survivors,” he said

Disaster officer for Mzuzu, Precious Mandala hailed MZUNI for the gesture, further pleading for more support.

Mandala said the sanitary pads that the institution has provided would go a long way in assisting women and teen girls in the camps.

“The assistance that we have received so far as DODMA is still not enough to carter for the people who were affected by the disaster, that is why we are still asking for more relief items for the survivors,” he said.
