COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE

The Department of Mathematics is one of the oldest departments at Mzuzu University. It was founded in 1999, the year Mzuzu University was officially launched. From a small department of two lecturers servicing 24 students on the Bachelor of Science (Education) degree program, the department now has 10 lecturing staff servicing around 500 students from five different faculties. These are the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Information Science and Communication, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism and Faculty of Health Sciences. Besides the faculties, the department also services the Centre for Security Studies and the Centre for Open and Distance Learning. Since 2004, the department has run the Master of Science in Information Theory, Coding and Cryptography programme. At present, the department also offers a PhD in Coding Theory.
